For me, it’s got to be… in no real order…
1) Kingdom Hearts 3
2) Final Fantasy VII Remake
3) God of War – the new one, I have the entire original series.
4) Stardew Valley on Vita (okay, yeah, this might never happen but it’s listed as a PS4 and Vita title on the trophies! I can at least have a little hope, right?)
5) All those damn otome games that Otomate/Idea Factory/Aksys have been waffling about localizing, including but not limited to: the rest of the Amnesia series, Hakuoki: Sweet School Life, and Code: Realize -Future Blessing- (which is supposed to be coming this year, but I still can’t preorder it yet!)
I really, really love those casual time management games. Especially the Delicious series and its various spin-offs. They make me smile.
Also… I have to admit I had fun playing HunieCam Studio. It was actually the first game I completed 100% on Steam and I even kept playing after that, setting up little challenges for myself. Subject matter aside, it’s a fun little management sim. Hell, I didn’t even really mind the subject matter because of how it was handled in a somewhat tongue-in-cheek manner, just like HuniePop was. Which, I guess, is another guilty pleasure game for me.
Finally… Phantasmagoria. I have to mention this one. I begged my parents to get it for me after seeing a trailer for it on one of the Sierra games I got from my uncle (I think it was on the disc for Shivers). I was 14 the first time I played it – uncensored, I might add – and I loved it and have played it several more times since then, making it a Halloween tradition of mine which got broken as newer computers put the game in a 2″x3″ window. It’s cheesy and badly acted and cliche as hell, but it’s got a soft spot in my heart and now I can play it properly once more thanks to GOG!
For me, that game would be Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly.
Sure, I beat Chrono Cross three times to unlock every character – which probably took longer to do – and also beat Eternal Darkness several times to get the “true ending”… but Fatal Frame II is one of my all-time favorites. I beat it seven times on various difficulties in order to unlock all the different outfits, and even after that I kept going back to it and beating it again. It’s probably the only game I have ever played on Nightmare difficulty, which is mostly because by now I know the game well enough that I can easily breeze through it. Except those damn fights with the twin doll. To this day, I still have trouble telling them apart and inevitably end up snapping the doll instead of the actual ghost.
Funnily enough, I have only played through the first game maybe three times. That’s because it’s the only game I’ve ever played which has given me trouble sleeping. Seriously. I’ve played Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Outlast… but the original Fatal Frame was the one which kept me awake at night, fearful that some malevolent spirit was going to grab me and try to kill me in my sleep.
