This Wasn’t On My Bingo Card
Every time there’s a new Nintendo Direct people start whispering about what long dead Nintendo franchise might be revived. Mother? F-Zero? Startropics? One of those series actually did show up this time, but so did a lesser known one that I don’t think anyone was expecting. Another Code: Recollection brings back a series we haven’t seen in nearly fifteen years with a full facelift.
The first title in this collection is Another Code: Two Memories, originally released in North America as Trace Memory. This adventure game originally released on the Nintendo DS in 2005 and drew a bit more attention than an adventure game would normally have in that period simply due to it being a relatively early game in the system’s life cycle. The DS library wasn’t yet as packed with great games as it would eventually be and Nintendo were still focused on making games that took full advantage of the system’s features. A sequel followed in 2009 on the Wii in Another Code R: Journey Into Lost Memories but while this sequel did see a PAL release, it never made it to North America. Whether this was due to the first game underperforming or due to the Wii’s peak having started to end is hard to say but fans who wanted to see the rest of protagonist Ashley’s journey in North America needed to import the game.
This collection is promising plenty of updates to both titles. Remastered graphics, new voice acting, new puzzles, and a new hint system to help players who aren’t overly familiar with adventure games will all be included and hopefully help Another Code: Recollection to gain more of a following this time than it found all those years ago. Time will tell if that comes to pass, but we’re definitely looking forward to revisiting Ashley’s journey when Another Code: Recollection plans to release on January 19th, 2024.
