It’s crazy to think that there was a time fifteen years ago when PC gaming felt nearly dead, before Steam came along and digital distribution revived that space in the market. Now the Steam Deck is taking that market into an entirely different place, one our staff has loved getting to explore this year. Here are some great PC games that released this year worth your time.

Cult of the Lamb

Holiday Buyers Guide

Also On: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch

Our Review

While Cult of the Lamb can look adorable at a glance, look deeper, and you’ll be shocked to see the levels of depravity these woodland creatures sink to. That’s okay, we had fun going along for the ride in this roguelike that mixes management aspects in as you have to manage a cult, all while fighting your way towards awakening an ancient God who may have been locked away for a reason.

Expeditions: Rome

Holiday Buyers Guide

Our Review

Setting a strategy RPG in ancient Rome is a brilliant swerve, but that alone wouldn’t get Expeditions: Rome on our list. No, what makes this a game worth checking out is the in-depth RPG gameplay, as well as a story filled with interesting characters who deal in shades of grey. PC players interested in a different take on the genre should absolutely give this one a try.

Kombinera

Holiday Buyers Guide

Also On: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch

Our Review

The best puzzle games make you feel like an idiot, up until the moment you figure things out and suddenly feel like a genius. Kombinera, a game about moving balls around a stage and trying to combine them, absolutely nails that element and is one of the most interesting puzzle titles to release in 2022. You’ll have to have patience to really enjoy it, but if you do, Kombinera is well worth checking out.

Strange Horticulture

Holiday Buyers Guide

Also On: Switch

Our Review

I didn’t know I needed a game about gardening until playing Strange Horticulture and being hooked on digging through page after page of my flower book, trying to identify the specific type my customer was asking for. Mixing in a story about witchcraft and the occult keeps things fresh, but at the end of the day, I was mostly just into the flowers.

Vampire Survivors

Holiday Buyers Guide

Also On: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One

Our Review

No game in 2022 made us say, “Just one more round,” quite like Vampire Survivors. While at first, it looks like the most basic game in the world, with little to do on a minute-to-minute basis beyond moving your character, you soon start to understand the deep strategy possible despite such little control. Add in an absurd number of things to unlock, and this becomes a game that is fun in short bursts but can keep you glued to the controller for hours.

Andrew Thornton
Andrew has been writing about video games for nearly twenty years, contributing to publications such as DarkStation, Games Are Fun, and the E-mpire Ltd. network. He enjoys most genres but is always pulled back to classic RPG's, with his favorite games ever including Suikoden II, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Phantasy Star IV. Don't worry though, he thinks new games are cool too, with more recent favorites like Hades, Rocket League, and Splatoon 2 stealing hundreds of hours of his life. When he isn't playing games he's often watching classic movies, catching a basketball game, or reading the first twenty pages of a book before getting busy and forgetting about it.
