Hey Poor Player Holiday Buyers Guide 2022 – What’s Old Is New

A Blast From the Past

Holiday Buyers Guide

Is it already that time again? With the Holidays closing in once more, we know a lot of you are looking for gifts for all the players in your lives, and maybe some things you’d like to get for yourselves too. If you’re not sure what to get, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. From November 3rd to November 18th, we’ll be bringing you guides to satisfy every type of player each weekday. Strap in and kiss your wallet goodbye.

We’ve reached peak remake with collections and remasters coming out every month, which bring classic games back to modern players. It’s a great trend, even if sometimes the games that return can feel surprising. Other titles feel obvious, with even fairly modern games heading to more platforms. Here are just some of our absolute favorites that came out in 2022.

13 Sentinels Aegis Rim

Platforms: Switch

Our Review

I can say with confidence that there’s nothing quite like 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim on the market. Combining elements of visual novels, adventure games, real-time strategy, and a huge love of classic science fiction, everything comes together to create one of the absolute best games of recent years. That Switch owners can now check it out several years after it originally released on PS4, with excellent performance that might even run better than on Sony’s console, is an opportunity players shouldn’t miss.

Capcom Fighting Collection

Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC

Our Review

If you don’t like Darkstalkers, then Capcom Fighting Collection is absolutely not for you. Capcom’s spooky horror series takes up a surprisingly large portion of this latest release, to the point where you could have almost just released a Darkstalkers collection. That’s not a bad thing for us, though, and it is fantastic to see these games become widely available on modern platforms. There are other interesting games in the release, too, such as Super Gem Fighter and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. If you’ve been craving a chance to hang out with some Night Warriors, though, this is as good a chance as you’re likely to get.

Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series

Holiday Buyers Guide

Platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, PC

Namco’s weird cat/rabbit hybrid mascot was missing in action for a lot of years, but we’re thrilled to see Klonoa return to gaming, even if it’s only in a rerelease of his past adventures. The original Klonoa has been remade and rereleased before, and while it still holds up as an excellent 2D platformer of its time, the real treat here is seeing Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil see its first rerelease in over 20 years since it first came out in the early days of the PS2. It’s a fantastic evolution for the series and one that deserves a broader audience.

Persona 5 Royal

Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, PC

Atlus sure loves to rerelease their games. The announcement this year, though, that the Persona series would be spreading beyond the PlayStation ecosystem was welcomed by Xbox, PC, and Nintendo fans. First up from those rereleases is Persona 5 Royal. Adding a ton of content to the original Persona 5, players who haven’t had a chance to check out the adventures of the Phantom Thieves should absolutely jump on the chance. Just be prepared to lose a lot of hours.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection

Holiday Buyers Guide

Platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, PC

Cowabunga dudes. The Turtles have a long history of excellent video games, which continued this year with the fantastic Shredder’s Revenge. For those who want to explore that history, though, the good and the bad, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection is for you. While not every game here is a winner, everything from the amazing Turtles in Time to obscure Game Boy games are here to let you get a great feel for where these heroes in a half-shell have been.

Andrew Thornton
Andrew has been writing about video games for nearly twenty years, contributing to publications such as DarkStation, Games Are Fun, and the E-mpire Ltd. network. He enjoys most genres but is always pulled back to classic RPG's, with his favorite games ever including Suikoden II, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Phantasy Star IV. Don't worry though, he thinks new games are cool too, with more recent favorites like Hades, Rocket League, and Splatoon 2 stealing hundreds of hours of his life. When he isn't playing games he's often watching classic movies, catching a basketball game, or reading the first twenty pages of a book before getting busy and forgetting about it.
