PAX West 2022: 30XX Hands-On Preview

The Blue Bomber Goes Rogue With Style in 30XX

30XX | Featured

Let me start this by saying something that’s an open secret – I’m a big Mega Man fan. Not the biggest, if there is such a thing, but I’ve been following the series since I was a young man. As such, I was truly bereft in that difficult period of time where it looked like Capcom had given up on it, and so I looked to Kickstarter for anything to fill that void. I quickly found something called Echoes of Eridu that got a name change to 20XX. And while I very much enjoyed that rogue-like platformer, I feel that 30XX improves upon it in every conceivable way.

30XX | Zen Primus

Who’s this Sigma you speak of? Meet Zen Primus.

30XX is visually more comparable to the Mega Man Zero games than its predecessor, and I couldn’t be happier with the result. There’s a ton of great details bursting free everywhere, from the level backgrounds to the playable characters to the angry robots you’re pummeling. You have both Nina and Ace return, and serve as the Mega Man and Zero style characters. I went with Nina, and was very pleased with how she handled. She could charge up powerful shots, shoot streams of bullets, wall climb and dash like a pro.

30XX | Delta Battle

As I played, I found challenge rooms that rewarded me with items if I beat them without taking too much damage. I also took on a rival character named Delta that seemed pretty threatening, but went down without too much of a fight. A highlight was when I got the opportunity to buy a robotic animal partner, but sadly I didn’t have enough currency to acquire them. Luckily, I hardly needed the help, and managed to demolish a gear tossing mini boss and a more challenging big boss that summoned gigantic fists in an effort to smash me.

30XX | Uppercut

The good news is, 30XX plays like a dream and is already in Early Access on Steam. The bad news is that we don’t know yet when it’s coming to consoles, but I suspect it’ll be coming to the big ones eventually. I’m personally really tempted to wait for it to arrive on Nintendo Switch, since playing 20XX on that system with friends was a highlight of the experience, and I’m sure 30XX will be even better.

30XX | Dragon Boss

If you’re a fan of platformers and don’t mind a little rogue spice, be sure and check out 30XX. You won’t be disappointed.
