The Last Of Us Part I Modernizes A Modern Classic, Again

I Can’t Let You Go

The Last of Us Part I

That Naughty Dog are remaking The Last of Us for PS5 was one of the worst kept secrets in the gaming industry even before the game leaked this morning, ahead of the official reveal at today’s Summer Game Fest Showcase. Now that we’ve seen the first trailer for this update however, we can say that it certainly looks pretty, even if we’re not quite sure we needed another version of this game.

The Last of Us Part I will release on PS5 September 2nd, 2022. It includes the full original game, as well as the Left Behind DLC for that title. Fully rebuilt from the ground up for modern hardware, it features improved graphics, new AI, and gameplay much more reminiscent of its own sequel.

While many love this game and I’m sure the improvements will make this the best way to play it, I do have to wonder why we needed it. The Last of Us Remastered released eight years ago on PS4 and is fully playable on PS5. While this new version of the game certainly looks better, and I’m confident it will play better as well, the remastered version is still an incredible game in 2022 and looks great on modern hardware. It’s hard to understand why anyone would play it and think that it needed an update even today. Still, its development will certainly give Naughty Dog some additional experience working with the PS5 and a PC version is on the way too, though the date for that is yet to be announced. That may ultimately be the best argument for redoing the game once again.

He enjoys most genres but is always pulled back to classic RPG's, with his favorite games ever including Suikoden II, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Phantasy Star IV. Don't worry though, he thinks new games are cool too, with more recent favorites like Hades, Rocket League, and Splatoon 2 stealing hundreds of hours of his life. When he isn't playing games he's often watching classic movies, catching a basketball game, or reading the first twenty pages of a book before getting busy and forgetting about it.
