Evil Next Door Is An Upcoming Post-Soviet Survival Horror

The monster next door is not always visible.

As time marches on inexorably, the Cold War fades from collective memory and becomes the stuff of myth, legend, and history textbooks. But the existential terrors that era instilled is evident even today, as is made obvious by the sheer amount of horror media which derives inspiration from that time. Games especially are suited to take advantage of it all. Look at S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 and the upcoming indie FPS HROT. Well, now another indie developer has decided to throw their hats into the gulag with Evil Next Door.

Set just after the breakup of the USSR, Evil Next Door places players in the realm of Ensk, a city ravaged by a mysterious and deadly epidemic. People who contract the disease soon forsake their sanity. Anarchy reigns supreme and martial law is in effect. This means that supplies are low and escaping the city is your only hope of survival. Players will take on the role of one such survivor as they try to avoid both the insane infected and an army that is all too trigger-happy.

However, because the city is quarantined, getting out is a slow and complicated process. You’ll first need to build a shelter and then maintain it, and see to the needs of others who will also take refuge in your shelter. You’ll need to send folks to scout for supplies whilst others will do crafting and maintenance, the player taking turns playing each individual. Additionally, other players will be in the game with their own shelters, and it’s up to individual players if they want to be cooperative or hostile. There’ll be a load of other NPCs with unique backstories who add to the game’s lore. Also, permadeath is a thing, but each play will result in a different experience with differing circumstances.
