Metroid Dread Update Gives You A Whole New Reason For Dread

Available Today

Metroid Dread

It’s no secret that we were big fans of Metroid Dread. My review last month gave the game a 4.5/5 and it made it into our ten favorite games of 2021. Even for us though, today’s first major update for the game may be a big ask.

A new Dread Mode makes Samus truly vulnerable. In this mode you’ll die in a single hit, even from environmental damage. While that’s definitely an interesting challenge, for someone who found Dread quite difficult from the start that’s very much not for me. For players who found Dread too hard though, a rookie mode will give you more recovery items and power, hopefully helping to make the game a bit easier.

That update is available today, but another update in April will add a boss rush mode as well. That’s more up my alley. Check out a trailer for these updates below.

Andrew has been writing about video games for nearly twenty years, contributing to publications such as DarkStation, Games Are Fun, and the E-mpire Ltd. network. He enjoys most genres but is always pulled back to classic RPG's, with his favorite games ever including Suikoden II, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Phantasy Star IV. Don't worry though, he thinks new games are cool too, with more recent favorites like Hades, Rocket League, and Splatoon 2 stealing hundreds of hours of his life. When he isn't playing games he's often watching classic movies, catching a basketball game, or reading the first twenty pages of a book before getting busy and forgetting about it.
