Wordle Acquired By The New York Times, To Remain Free “Initially”

That Took Off Fast

Two months ago you probably didn’t even know what Wordle was. I certainly didn’t. Now I play it every day, as do scores of my friends and family. This word title hit, played in a browser, gives you six chances each day to guess a five letter word. For each letter you guess you’ll be told if it is in the word and in the right position. Using these hints you have to guess what the word is. It’s simple, elegant, and highly addicting. With only one word a day (though an archive was recently announced to allow you to play older words), I look forward to each new day for another chance.

Players weren’t the only ones who noticed. The New York Times have purchased the game from creator Josh Wardle for over a million dollars. That’s a big rise in such a short time. It will join the Times’ other game offerings such as their famous crossword puzzle. Mr. Wardle saw a natural fit with the publisher. ““New York Times Games play a big part in its origins, and so this step feels very natural to me.” The New York Times have advised that the game will initially remain free, which seems to suggest that in the longer term that will not be the case. Check out a nifty Hot to Play guide from “Today” below.

Andrew Thornton
Andrew has been writing about video games for nearly twenty years, contributing to publications such as DarkStation, Games Are Fun, and the E-mpire Ltd. network. He enjoys most genres but is always pulled back to classic RPG's, with his favorite games ever including Suikoden II, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Phantasy Star IV. Don't worry though, he thinks new games are cool too, with more recent favorites like Hades, Rocket League, and Splatoon 2 stealing hundreds of hours of his life. When he isn't playing games he's often watching classic movies, catching a basketball game, or reading the first twenty pages of a book before getting busy and forgetting about it.
