The Pale Beyond says choices are a matter of survival
Last week, Irish game dev team Bellular Studios (WoWTales) and indie publishing powerhouse Fellow Traveller (Paradise Killer, Suzerain) announced their newest title, The Pale Beyond. The Pale Beyond is the debut title of Bellular Studios, founded by YouTuber-turned-gamedev Michael Bell (Bellular Gaming) and creative director Thomas Hislop, and is set to release sometime in 2022. An adventure-survival game focusing on an expedition through an inhospitable icy wasteland, The Pale Beyond makes its perilous journey through this frozen world to PCs via Steam next year.
Taking inspiration from the real-life expeditions of the 20th century, The Pale Beyond aims to bring the feel of survival-based gameplay through a text-based narrative where every choice means the difference between life and death. Players are thrust into the world as a makeshift leader, elected by their crewmates in the absence of their mysteriously missing captain. Now responsible for 24 souls (36 counting the sled dogs), players must navigate complex crew relationships and manage the scarce and ever-dwindling resources to ensure the expedition not only survives but succeeds.
“A polar exploration game set in an unforgiving frozen wasteland: Embark on a treacherous voyage across the ice and into the Pale Beyond, a stunning yet harsh landscape that can change at any moment.
Thrust into leadership: After the Captain mysteriously goes missing, you unwillingly take the position of Captain. You didn’t ask to lead this crew but here you are: stuck in the ice, miles from civilization and everyone looking for you to lead.
Your relationships with the crew are critical and also complex: Keeping the crew and sled dogs safe, fed, and warm during an expedition is key for survival. Surviving the ice will matter little in the face of a mutiny, every vote will count.”
