Crank Playdate Up in 2022
Well folks, it’s bad news today if you’ve patiently been waiting for your newfangled Playdate systems. They were originally slated to start shipping in 2021, but now that’s been pushed back until sometime in 2022. The reason for the delay is a battery issue that was discovered late in the production process. As such, all the batteries in the Playdate systems have been replaced.
Here’s what the Panic team had to say about the delay:
This quickly turned into a months-long, all-hands-on-deck research stress-ball, and we halted production at the factory,” says Panic’s Cabel Sasser in the first Playdate Owners Update newsletter that was sent today to all Playdate pre-order holders. “We made the difficult, expensive call to replace all of our existing batteries with new ones from a totally different battery supplier.
While that’s definitely the bummer, there is some good news. If you’re already in line to get the Playdate, you won’t lose your placement. So you’ll still be slated to get the system once it starts shipping in 2022. And better yet, the new batteries to be included in the system are purported to have a longer lifespan. Additionally, future Playdates will have new CPU chips and redesigned boards. As for the Pulp Public Beta, that won’t require the system to participate. Meanwhile, the Playdate SDK should arrive in February and Season One begins the moment you set up your system.
Definitely a mixed bag, but overall good news. Thanks for reading and stay tuned to HPP for more Playdate news as it hits.
