Here’s How To Stealthily Avoid Ghosts As Dead or Alive’s Purple-Haired Kunoichi Ayane In Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water
Dead or Alive mainstay and kunoichi of the Mugen Tenshin clan, Ayane, makes a cameo as a playable character in Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, now available on consoles and PC.
However, you won’t be able to choose this purple-haired heroine right from the start. To unlock Ayane, you’ll first have to complete the main story from episodes “First Drop” to “Last Drop.” Upon beating the game, simply load your old file. Then, you’ll be able to access Ayane’s chapter “First Thread” from the episode select screen.
Ayane’s episodes play out quite a bit differently from the rest of the game, as they’re designed with stealth in mind. Ghosts now actively patrol the various areas of Mt. Hikami, and you’ll need to sneakily avoid them as you seek out a missing girl named Tsumugi Katashina. In Ayane’s episodes, the Shadow Reading ability is replaced with a glowing purple string that slowly extends to show the player the fastest route to their destination. Additionally, instead of using a Camera Obscura, Ayane is armed with a Spirit Stone Flashlight which she can use to stun ghosts and slip by before they recover.
While it doesn’t take especially long to complete her story, it’s a fun distraction while it lasts, and a fresh take on the Fatal Frame formula.
That’s all it takes to unlock Ayane in Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water. Now go out there and work your ninja magic!
