Why Like This?
Super Smash Bros Ultimate fans saw many of their dreams come true this morning as Sora was announced as the final fighter for the game. While Sora has long been requested, in some ways it is a slightly odd fit. Outside of the music title Melody of Memory, no Kingdom Hearts games are available on Switch. That’s changing. Sort of.
Toward the end of his Sakurai Presents stream they dropped news that the main Kingdom Hearts saga would be coming to Switch. This includes Kingdom Hearts – HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix -, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts III. Sadly, they won’t actually be playing on your Switch. All three will be coming as cloud enabled versions of the titles. While the initial announcement made it sound like that might only be the case for the third game, Nintendo clarified on Twitter that all three will be played via the cloud.
While for some fans this may be better than nothing, it is a strange decision. The first two of these titles are ports of PS2 games. The second’s main game is a 3DS remake. There’s no reason these games shouldn’t be workable on the Switch natively. It would take more work, but it could be done. Kingdom Hearts III is a bit more understandable but this just leaves a somewhat bad taste in the mouth. Still, playing these games on the Switch at all is at least an option for fans wanting to see what Sora’s all about.
