Crystal Dynamics Teams Up With The Initiative For Perfect Dark

Joanna Dark’s Return Is Still Far Off

Perfect Dark

Fans waiting for sixteen years (or twenty one years if we’re being less than generous to the forgettable Perfect Dark Zero) for Joanna Dark’s return are surely eager for news about her upcoming title. Announced at last year’s Game Awards, Perfect Dark is in development at new studio The Initiative. They won’t be doing it alone. Today they announced a partnership with Crystal Dynamics to help bring the game to life.

Crystal Dynamics have been around for the 90s and are probably most known for games like Gex, Legacy of Kain, and in recent years Tomb Raider. Their most recent title is Marvel’s Avengers, which has received a mixed reception. Still, they’ve made more than their share of hits over the years.

Perfect Dark

The partnership feels strange at first glance. This studio is owned by Square Enix, not usually a group who would be providing support on a Microsoft published title almost certainly set to be a PC and Xbox exclusive. That the studio head at The Initiative, Darrell Gallagher, previously served in the same role at Crystal Dynamics helps a little. It still doesn’t quite tell us what’s in this for Square Enix though. Still, having a veteran studio helping out a brand new one could be a positive.

When this return of Perfect Dark was announced we were told it was early in development so we’ll likely have to wait a bit longer to see more. Expectations will be high but Crystal Dynamics are the sort of studio who might be able to meet them. For now though, check out the most recent available trailer below.

Andrew Thornton
Andrew has been writing about video games for nearly twenty years, contributing to publications such as DarkStation, Games Are Fun, and the E-mpire Ltd. network. He enjoys most genres but is always pulled back to classic RPG's, with his favorite games ever including Suikoden II, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Phantasy Star IV. Don't worry though, he thinks new games are cool too, with more recent favorites like Hades, Rocket League, and Splatoon 2 stealing hundreds of hours of his life. When he isn't playing games he's often watching classic movies, catching a basketball game, or reading the first twenty pages of a book before getting busy and forgetting about it.
