Pre-orders For Physical And Digical Copies Of Alwa’s Awakening: The 8-Bit Edition Close On October 17
Released on Steam 2017 and later ported to consoles, Alwa’s Awakening was a heartfelt love letter to the 8-bit era that did a great job of capturing the look and feel of some long-forgotten NES classic. However, if you’ve ever daydreamed about what it’d be like to actually play the game on your Nintendo, you’re in luck because Alwa’s Awakening: The 8-Bit Edition is now available for pre-order courtesy of Retro-Bit Publishing.
Programmed by Brad Smith, Alwa’s Awakening: The 8-Bit Edition condenses the 280 MB adventure down so that it’ll fit on one 512 KB NES cartridge while keeping the essence of the release alive. This sounds like a tall order for sure. However, presumably through immense talent and a little bit of wizardry that’d make the game’s mystical protagonist Zoe blush, it looks like Mr. Smith has been able to pull it off.
Don’t believe me? Just watch the trailer below and see for yourself:
Alwa’s Awakening: The 8-Bit Edition Trailer
Priced at $59.99 and now available to pre-order, the physical version of Alwa’s Awakening: The 8-Bit Edition includes the following items:
- A game cartridge in a frosted clear case complete with save battery
- An exclusive glossy slipcover
- Retro-style box featuring art by Elden Pixel’s team
- A certificate of authenticity
- Full-color instruction manual featuring tips and additional artwork
- Animated lenticular card showcasing Zoe or one of the enemies in the game
- A mini-level poster showcasing the town of Westwood
- An interview with the Alwa’s Awakening creator Mikael Forslind.
If you’re a heartless monster and you sold off your NES ages ago, that’s okay too. In addition to the physical cartridge, a Digical (it’s digital and physical, get it?) version is also available. This bundles a DRM-free ROM of the game onto a character-themed USB stick. Though it doesn’t include any of the physical bonus goodies mentioned above, it does come with digital versions of the manual and interview, along with displayable packaging and wallpapers featuring exclusive artwork. The Digical version is priced at a budget-friendly $19.99.
Mike gave Alwa’s Awakening some serious praise in his review back in 2017, saying:
“I’d be doing the retro community a disservice if I didn’t recommend Alwa’s Awakening. The enjoyment I got from playing this was immense. Finding a new area and hearing the amazing music accompanied by it brought me back to a time where the only care I had was beating the game. Everything here just feels exactly as it should.”
That said, this looks like a release retro-minded gamers won’t want to miss. If you want to add Alwa’s Awakening: The 8-Bit Edition to your NES library, you won’t need to cast any crazy spells. Simply stop by Castlemania Games or Limited Run Games‘ online stores to secure a copy.
So, what do you think of the look of the game? Do you plan on getting your mitts on a copy before pre-orders end? Sound off in the comments and let us know.
