Tandem: A Tale of Shadows takes you to the shadow realm
Thomas Kane has gone missing.
This wouldn’t be too out of place for a world-famous magician — and the son of illusionists at that — but something about his disappearance isn’t sitting right with little Londoner Emma. Determined to uncover his whereabouts, Emma goes searching for him in the rainy streets of her city when, suddenly, a teddy bear falls out of a speeding carriage. Normally, this wouldn’t be such a noteworthy event, except for the fact that the teddy bear hopped up and started chasing the carriage! Shocked by the seemingly magical teddy bear, Emma followed in pursuit, the pair eventually arriving at a mysterious castle.
Just as they entered the grounds of the castle, a supernatural force grabbed the teddy bear, pulling him into another dimension! Determined to get to the bottom of this otherworldly place, the pair decided to work together — Emma in one dimension and the bear, Fenton, in another. Will the two of them unveil the secrets shrouded within this mystical mansion, locate the missing magician, and live to tell the tale?
So begins Tandem: A Tale of Shadows, a creepy cute puzzle platformer that fans of Tim Burton will most certainly enjoy. A narrative-driven adventure spanning 40 different levels set in 5 uniquely interconnected worlds, Tandem: A Tale of Shadows will release on Steam, Switch, PS4, and XBox One some time in 2021. Ideal for both casual and serious gamers alike, Tandem: A Tale of Shadows is bound to please just about anyone looking for multi-dimensional gameplay.
Tandem: A Tale of Shadows has players taking on the roles of both Emma and Fenton as they work their way through the castle, starting with the gardens and moving on into the boiler room, kitchen, greenhouse, and more. Emma moves throughout the hallowed halls normally, armed with only a lantern, while Fenton, trapped in the shadow dimension, moves in tandem with her on the walls. Emma can make paths for Fenton by illuminating certain areas, casting shadows for Fenton to walk upon; Fenton, in turn, can turn switches and grab crystals, throwing them to Emma and clearing the level.
Switching between Fenton and Emma is a breeze, and it’s clear that the game wants to tease your brain by way of puzzles instead of any threatening beasties or other things that might go bump in the night. That doesn’t mean there isn’t any danger — Fenton can die if impaled on shadow spikes, for example — but for the first few levels at least, all is relatively calm while solving puzzles. Of course, the creepy factor is still there, as there are creatures watching from a distance, making spooky sounds to really set an eerie ambiance. For those who enjoy the whole Tim Burton aesthetic, Tandem: A Tale of Shadows is definitely going to please.
When it comes to puzzle difficulty, Tandem: A Tale of Shadows is something that many will be able to run through very quickly. I was able to clear through the first world in less than an hour, and although the difficulty is supposed to increase as players get further in, it’s still not something that will hurt anyone’s brain until much later on. That doesn’t mean it’s not fun, of course, but for the first few worlds, casual gamers and speedrunners will likely get more out of this than those looking for a tough challenge. But those later worlds? Definitely get that brain ready for some serious teasing.
Tandem: A Tale of Shadows has so much charm and personality in two different dimensions with puzzles that aim to tease, so it’s safe to say that a wide variety of gamers will be pleased with what the dev team has created here. I personally loved the homage to the Victorian era, which upped the creepiness factor immensely due to its older feel. Tandem: A Tale of Shadows is absolutely a puzzle platformer to watch out for, so if this style and genre excites you, be sure to keep it on your wishlist.
