Rune Factory Celebrates Turning 15 With Retrospective Trailer

Celebrate Before Rune Factory 5 Releases

Rune Factory

All series technically turn 15 if you give them enough time. Not all of them are still popular and active after so long however. Which explains why the creators of the series want to celebrate 15 years of Rune Factory.

A spin-off of the Story of Seasons series, Rune Factory takes that game’s farming gameplay and adds i dungeon crawling and combat. It makes for a unique mix which has captivated fans through five handheld and two console installments. Rune Factory 5 debuted in Japan in May and is set to hit the rest of the world next year. The series, which debuted on the Nintendo DS, has now released games on the Wii, PS3, 3DS, PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Switch. If its been a long time since you’ve dusted off some of those consoles, that just goes to show how long the series has been around.

Rune Factory

The series’ history can get a bit confusing due to the naming. Many still think of the name Harvest Moon when they think about it. The original game’s subtitle was even A Fantasy Harvest Moon. The confusion comes due to licensing issues. The Story of Seasons games were published for many years in North America under the name Harvest Moon. North American publisher Natsume owns the right to that name though so when developer Marvelous decided to have their own team take over publishing the series, they had to rename it. Hence, the name Story of Seasons, which is the continuation of the original Harvest Moon series. Natsume then started creating their own games using the Harvest Moon name which continue to release to this day.

Fans of the series will definitely want to check out this retrospective which you can view below.

Andrew Thornton
Andrew has been writing about video games for nearly twenty years, contributing to publications such as DarkStation, Games Are Fun, and the E-mpire Ltd. network. He enjoys most genres but is always pulled back to classic RPG's, with his favorite games ever including Suikoden II, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Phantasy Star IV. Don't worry though, he thinks new games are cool too, with more recent favorites like Hades, Rocket League, and Splatoon 2 stealing hundreds of hours of his life. When he isn't playing games he's often watching classic movies, catching a basketball game, or reading the first twenty pages of a book before getting busy and forgetting about it.
