Are You Ready To Play?

Playdate Preorders

Panic, the creator of the upcoming Playdate handheld, today announced that they will open preorders on July 29th. They will go live at 10:00 AM PDT.

A few details about what to expect were unveiled too. Playdate plans to ship 20,000 units in late 2021. Despite this, preorders will not be capped. You can order a system no matter what. If you’re not in the first 20,000 units, you’ll just have to wait longer. Until 2022. Orders for 2022 will be made based on sales.

The system isn’t the only thing available. The Playdate cover will also go on preorder at the same time. The dock, which we highlighted during our deep dive into the system’s E3 showing, will be available at a later date. You can view countries they will ship to at launch on the Playdate website.

A Playdate system costs $179 before taxes and shipping. All major credit cards will be accepted. No word yet on other payment methods such as Paypal. Preorders will charge full price up front, but you can cancel your order any time. Will you be getting an order in? Let us know in the comments. You can check out the system’s E3 showing below.

Andrew has been writing about video games for nearly twenty years, contributing to publications such as DarkStation, Games Are Fun, and the E-mpire Ltd. network. He enjoys most genres but is always pulled back to classic RPG's, with his favorite games ever including Suikoden II, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Phantasy Star IV. Don't worry though, he thinks new games are cool too, with more recent favorites like Hades, Rocket League, and Splatoon 2 stealing hundreds of hours of his life. When he isn't playing games he's often watching classic movies, catching a basketball game, or reading the first twenty pages of a book before getting busy and forgetting about it.
