Pre-orders now open
Developer Avore, the VR studio behind the Pixel Ripped series, has announced that YUKI is now available for pre-order
A VR bullet hell roguelike (that’s not a combination you see every day, huh?) set in a multidimensional anime universe, YUKI allows players to tap into their own inner child by controlling Yuki’s action-figure wings using their own hands. While players will certainly be able to tell that some of YUKI‘s inspiration came from classics like Star Fox, the ability to manually fly your own action figure around while going “nrrrr pshhhww!” is pretty novel. …The added player sound effects might be optional, though.
While both the bullet hell and roguelike genres are known for sporting a typically high level of difficulty, YUKI is stated to have an approach that is much more “pick up and play.” Rather than starting out difficult, it has been stated that the game will gradually become more difficult over time as the player grows and unlocks more power-ups and items.
With YUKI, we wanted to make each run feel like a completely new game.” said Lead Game Designer & Associate Director Pedro Câmara. “Every session feels like an opportunity to invest in a strategy that you haven’t tried yet, and to tackle a uniquely-generated combination of bullet patterns and obstacles. When it comes to level design, our ultimate goal was to embrace three-dimensional gameplay in a way that would be impossible in “pancake” (non-VR) games. We wanted to create challenges that use 3D space as much as possible, making players perform precise and fluid movements in all axes, as if they were dancing with the enemy bullets. When we hear players saying ‘I couldn’t imagine a game that uses spatial awareness like this if VR didn’t exist’, we know we did a good job.”
YUKI is slated to release on July 22 on the Oculus Store and Steam. What are your thoughts on this game so far? Do you like the idea of controlling your character like it’s an action figure? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
