Director Hidetaka Miyazaki estimates Elden Ring will take players roughly 30 hours to complete “without a lot of detours.”
If you’re one of the countless gamers wondering how much time you’ll need to set aside next January to explore Elden Ring‘s The Lands Between, then you’re in luck. In a recent interview with Famitsu, the game’s director Hidetaka Miyazaki gave his best guess as to how long it would take players to finish the game. That is if they don’t find themselves getting too distracted.
So, How Long Is Elden Ring?
When asked by Famitsu how much playtime to expect, Miyazaki replied (via Google Translate), “This is a question I’m not good at. I’ve been playing without a lot of detours, and I’m thinking about 30 hours, but honestly, I don’t know yet.”
But judging from Elden Ring‘s massive map, those detours could very well be plentiful. Of course, being a Souls game, players should also expect a pretty meaty challenge. So if you’re not as adept at the genre as the man who essentially created it, your mileage will probably vary.
This length seems to fall right in line with Elden Ring developer FromSoftware’s previous offerings. Released in 2016, Dark Souls 3 took players an average of 32 hours to complete the main story. Meanwhile, the studio’s prior release, Bloodborne, took players roughly 34 hours to finish.
No doubt about it, Elden Ring‘s sense of scale certainly seems to be greatly expanded with its wide-open vistas and grander landscapes. But that doesn’t mean you should expect to be spending a whole lot more time with the game judging from Miyazaki’s answer.
Elden Ring is currently in development for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game will release on January 21, 2022.
