Forever Entertainment and MegaPixel Studios breathe new life into SEGA’s iconic arcade shooter with The House of the Dead: Remake
Way back in October of 2019, Forever Entertainment announced that they had signed an agreement with SEGA to publish remakes of The House of the Dead and The House of the Dead 2. However, since that announcement, the publisher has been mostly silent regarding the projects.
Until now, that is.
During today’s Nintendo Indie World Showcase, we were given our first look at The House of the Dead: Remake in action. And as a longtime fan of the series, I have to say I’m pretty blown away by what we’ve been shown so far from this remake of SEGA’s iconic 1997 rail-shooter.
The footage is short but sweet, with the entire trailer running just over a minute long. Still, it does a great job of showing off the game’s striking new engine, which really brings the dingy halls of Curien’s creepy mansion to life like never before. What’s particularly noteworthy is the moody light sourcing and impressive use of shadows that come together to make the familiar corridors and courtyards of the mansion much more atmospheric this time around.
The trailer caps off with Curien monologuing before the battle with the stage 3 boss Hermit (Type 6803). Sadly, we don’t get a chance to see that terrifying tarantula in action. But with only four stages total, I suppose it’s best if they save some surprises for us before the game releases.

In addition to the new trailer, Forever Entertainment also released a handful of new screenshots.
This screen, taken from the mansion’s dungeon, reveals the addition of a new weapon: the assault rifle. The original House of the Dead only allowed players to gun down ghouls with their standard-issue AMS pistol. It’ll be interesting to see what other weapons we’ll be able to get our hands on throughout the game.
Lifted from the game’s third chapter, a creature-filled laboratory, this image shows off The House of the Dead: Remake‘s moody lighting and shadows. These updated effects go a long way towards elevating SEGA’s beloved light gun shooter from campy to genuinely creepy.
This lounge looks like it’d be a great place to sip some whiskey or shoot some billiards. At least it would be if it weren’t for all the living dead wandering around, looking to sink their teeth into anyone foolish enough to get in their way.
Many of the screens showcased today are from the game’s third chapter. Here, we see a poor researcher about to be mauled by a ghoul in a tight corridor. Here’s hoping the player is a good shot, or he’ll have more than neon green monster blood on his hands.
Something tells me the big guy here has seen better days. The original House of the Dead featured a fair bit of destructibility when it comes to blasting holes in the various zombies and monsters you’d encounter. The remake isn’t going to shy away from the old ultraviolence from the looks of the horribly disfigured ghoul above.
While the trailer didn’t let us see Hermit in action, that’s OK. We still get a look at him in all of his web-spewing glory in this screenshot. If you didn’t have crippling arachnophobia before, you probably do now. Enjoy!
Lastly, here’s a look at the updated model for Dr. Curien. He’s the creep responsible for all of the things that go bump in the night that you’ll be murdering throughout the game.
Sadly, no firm release date has been announced yet. Though Forever Entertainment plans to bring House of the Dead: Remake to the Switch sometime in 2021.
