Nostalgia is Calling
Remember the 90’s? Me too. I grew up back then, and I love games that are stylistically reminiscent of that era. Even Narrative games, which aren’t always my first choice for genre. Narrative adventures live or die by their style, which is good news for Fire Tonight. Developed by Reptoid Games and slated to be published by Way Down Deep, it’s a tale of romance set amidst a literal inferno. It’s also inspired by a song with the same name in the Information Society Hack album from the 90’s. But now let’s put our wayback machine aside and talk about why Fire Tonight looks so interesting.
The game has players alternate between a young couple – Maya and Devin. As their city burns, they have to use their wits to avoid harm and steady their nerves. Their ultimate goal being to work their way safely back into each others’ arms. Oh and since the game is set in the 90’s, you can’t have them rely on handy tools like smartphones to survive the catastrophe.
What already sticks out to me about Fire Tonight is the visual style. It’s has delightfully cartoony aesthetic, with really charming characters and good use of color. If you like what you see, there’s good news. Fire Tonight is slated to release on Switch, PC and Mac in Q2 2021. Or if you’re not convinced yet, then please take a gander at the trailer below!
