Ghosts ‘n Demons proves the classic is still a rather ghoulish affair.
Here at Hey Poor Player we recently reviewed Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection. We love it, despite the absolutely brutal difficulty — and why wouldn’t we? It’s a classic for a reason. A painful, agonizing, sadistic classic that only a masochist could love. Being the suckers for punishment that we are, we decided we needed more. More death. More frustration. And more tried-and-true rock hard platforming. Fortunately, we were not left wanting for long. Enter Ghosts ‘n Demons.
Ghosts ‘n Demons is a fan game made by a developer who calls themselves BonusJZ in celebration of the original release’s 30th anniversary. As expected, you play as Sir Arthur who has to save Princess Prin Prin from an evil force (the devil himself, naturally). There are loads of cool features, such as scanline effects and higher-resolution playing areas. It also looks pretty awesome, drawing from the pixel art from the assorted console and computer releases around the original game’s launch.
Ghosts ‘n Demons is not quite as hard as the original — in fact, it may be a good place for newbies to start — and veteran players should handle it fine. Nonetheless, there are hard and turbo modes to unlock if you want a bit of an extra challenge. Or if you just love pain. Which, if you love the original, chances are you like to suffer… at least when it comes to gaming.
Ghosts ‘n Demons is free to download and play, although the author is charging a fee to get the latest version which includes bug fixes and tweaks. Considering all the effort that’s gone into the game, it only seems fair anyway. It’s for Windows only, though there are unconfirmed reports of it running in Wine. You can get it from itch.io here.
