Power to the Players

UK-based theatre-company-turned-games-publisher Hidden Track and indie developer Cael O’Sullivan have announced their player-driven title, How To Win, will be released on Steam on March 31, 2021. The project launched over the summer of 2020 and is the result of polled answers from the player audience dictating not only the rules of the game, but how to win it. According to the Steam page, “all five chapters of How to Win: Season One have been compiled and remastered on Steam, along with new functionality and brand new content.” Winning suggestions included investing money in a potato-based pyramid scheme, a monster drawn by a five-year-old, running away and joining the circus, and RAISE THE KRAKEN. The result? “Chaos,” says the team.

Originally commissioned by Harrogate Theatres and HOME, Manchester, Hidden Track encourages interested parties to “explore the world we made, find out how it ended… then tell us what to do different in Season Two. Whatever you decide, that’s what happens next.” How to Win: Season One is currently available to play in browser on the HOME website; although the suggested price is £5, it’s being offered as a name-your-own-price game with free being an option. All proceeds will be given directly back to the artists in addition to the HOME Response Fund, which offers financial support to artists in the Manchester, UK area through commissions.

Hidden Track, originally a theatre company, creatively pivoted towards game development during the pandemic lockdowns in 2020. They have previously worked with Cael O’Sullivan on another title, Shut In, which explored the depression, anxiety, and hopelessness that has been commonly experienced by those stuck at home during this time. How to Win was another lockdown-inspired effort, as it was meant to bring people together in a fun, light-hearted way during an extended period of physical distancing.

Consider adding the title to your Steam wishlist, and check out the trailer for How to Win below:

Born at a very young age; self-made thousandaire. Recommended by 4 out of 5 people that recommend things. Covered in cat hair. Probably the best sleeper in the world. Still haven't completed the civil war quest in Skyrim but I'm kind of okay with that. Too rad to be sad.
