A historic new release for RTS fans
2021 is slowly shaping up to be an interesting year for RTS fans. We were recently treated to Lambda Wars, which reached its long-awaited 1.0 release after 13 years. Now, another freeware indie favorite 0 A.D. (which also seems to languish in development for decades at a time) has made another much-anticipated release.
The new version, titled Alpha 24: “Xšayāršā” (pronounced khsha-ya-ṛsha), includes a whole slew of new content and tweaks. We’re talking new units, new maps, interface adjustments, hotkey editing, and of course plenty of rebalancing for the game’s very impressive roster of ancient civilizations.
The game is still in an alpha state and will likely remain so for a while still. There are various bugs and issues that still need to be resolved, chief among them being lag whenever there are very large amounts of units in play. Nonetheless, the game is extremely playable, and is great fun in multiplayer as any good RTS should be. The included AI is pretty good too — considering its alpha state — and it kicked my butt more times than I care to admit, even on easier settings.
Interested in checking out 0 A.D. for yourself? Get the game from its official webpage here. The developers note that some shady sites might be selling 0 A.D. even in its current alpha state, but advises players to always check out their official site for a 100% free download. Available for PC, Mac, and Linux, Wildfire Games promises that 0 A.D. will always be free, fun, and without any hidden money-making agenda. As they say on their site: “No ‘freemium’ model, no in-game advertising, no catch.”
