This Is The ‘Where’s Waldo?’ of PlayStation Easter Eggs
Like many others, I was unable to get my hands on a Sony PlayStation 5 upon launch. And it wasn’t until two months later after I — and several beloved friends of mine — had tried almost daily to procure one when I was finally able to play it. And though there are quite a few games I’m likely going to cover and play for the site, one that surprisingly stood out has been Astro’s Playroom. A platformer tutorial in the styles of Mario, Astro’s Playroom comes for free with every console. It also showcases the system’s newest functions of the PS DualSense controller but also serves as a sort of homage to the PlayStation’s history. Astro’s Playroom is also loaded with over 60 PlayStation Easter Eggs. With so many to list, it was difficult, but here are my choices for the top 5.
5. Silent Hill 2
At first, this one was a bit hard to find, but when I found it beneath one of the platforms at the SSD Speedway, I immediately felt horrified. Of course, this is the reference to the Pyramid Heads from Silent Hill 2, the Konami horror classic from the PS2.
4. Shadow Of The Colossus
It didn’t take long to realize what this iron giant was meant to be. A tribute to Shadow Of The Colossus, this one was pretty hard to miss while scaling the GPU jungle. Later on, you can even get up close and personal while carried in the palm of its hand.
3. Metal Gear Solid
What would a game about PlayStation be without the necessary Easter Egg featuring Solid Snake? Especially considering Metal Gear Solid was one of the PlayStation’s greatest hits and the game which made Hideo Kojima’s career. You can find him in Frigid Floes at Cooling Springs.
2. God Of War
Though there are several references to God of War, including an in-game console version several bots will be playing, you can actually find Kratos and his son along the Bot Beach at Cooling Springs looking badass and epic as ever.
1. The Last Of Us
And of course, because I’m the series’ biggest fan, I instinctively found this gem referring to The Last of Us over at the GPU Jungle. Where Joel and Ellie, in their signature clothing and Joel with a brick in his hand, hide from an adorable bot covered in the game’s equivalent of ‘tiny mushrooms’.
And that’s my top five! Please feel free to comment and share some of your favorites as well. And definitely, if you get the PlayStation 5, play Astro’s Playroom. You can also read our full Astro’s Playroom review if you like as well.
