Hold Onto Your Butts! Sephiroth is Coming to Smash Bros.
Okay, I know it’s comparatively late to share this news, but bear with me. I don’t watch The Game Awards, or rarely. Mostly because the games I most care about often don’t even get nominated. I think you know by now that I love indie and niche. But I also have a soft spot in my heart for weird games like Smash Bros. And I also have a fondness for old school RPG series. So when I saw in my Switch news feed that Sephiroth had been confirmed for Smash Bros., my brain might have overloaded for a bit.
Excuses aside, I’m really excited by this reveal. Especially on the heels of the Minecraft representative, who was initially met with disdain by many (though to be honest, Steve is pretty awesome). Final Fantasy VII was a RPG that helped define my childhood, and even years later, I still love the brutal arrogance and eerie grace of Sephiroth. Additionally, I’m constantly saying we need more villains in Smash Bros. So why not the Yin to Cloud’s Yang?
Though we are short on details for now, the trailer showed that Sephiroth retains his ridiculous sword range. Hell, he starts things off by cutting Galeem in half with one attack. So that’s cool. It also appears as though Sephiroth has access to a counter or two (yay), just to make sure he’s extra cruel. I was also fascinated by how he goes full “One-winged angel” and sprouts a black wing during battle. Akin to characters such as Joker, it seems this boosts his capabilities temporarily, and might even modify his attacks. Long story short, Sephiroth looks pretty amazing. I’m beyond stoked he’s coming to Smash Bros. Ultimate, and hope the wait isn’t too far out. Though fret not, since it appears Sakurai will be explaining his mechanics next week. In the meantime, feel free to catch the official IGN trailer below!
