Italian Indie Dev Studios Propose ‘Quarantine Jam’ During Coronavirus Outbreak

Be safe, make games!

As Italy announced heavy travel restrictions after their COVID-19 (coronavirus) death toll jumped by 97 to 463, a group of Italian indie developers decided to host an impromptu game jam in an effort to lift spirits. Dubbed “Quarantine Jam,” the three-day event is open from Friday at 12:00 PM to March 16th 2020 at 3:00 PM (GMT +1) and is hosted by CyberLab Studios, Shuttle Studio, Sviluppare Giochi, and Devs Make Games.

Michele Maresca from CyberLab Studios posted about the event in the public Facebook group Indie Game Chat:

“Dear friends, as many of you know, the COVID-19 threat in Italy is forcing many of us to stay in our houses or, at least, with nowhere to go as most activities have been shut down as a precaution. Then we thought: why not having some fun with a game jam? That’s why, here at CyberLab Studios, we decided to kickstart the Quarantine Game Jam! Grab this opportunity to stay safe and have fun, protecting yourself and your loved ones!”

According to the official page, the theme will be revealed on Friday, March 13th at 8:00 PM (GMT +1), and 13 people have already joined at the time of this publication.

Although anyone is free to enter — either as an individual or a team — the hosts strongly encourage team members to collaborate remotely in an effort to minimize physical encounters given the jam’s “peculiar philosophy”.
