Come back to the arcades one more time
Those of us who are retro heads probably grew up in the arcades, and it’s titles like Altered Beast that were specifically catered to suck up all our quarters. We’ve never been wanting for a chance to be able to revisit this monster masher, but one of the more interesting chances to revisit it has appeared in the form of a fan game by a developer going by the name of LucasCCBJogos.
Although the name is somewhat uncreative, much thought has gone into this reworking. The game contains three different modes – normal, hard, and battle mode – each with their own respective rules and ideas. Normal mode features five levels with the improved versions of the original game’s graphics, including new enemy and boss sprites. Hard mode is a far different take featuring five levels and assorted new enemies and boss types. Battle mode is perhaps the most radical of all, slightly more story-orientated and featuring what is essentially a boss rush.
The game was developed using Construct 2; the somewhat antiquated version of the much-loved and relatively simple HTML5 game development tool. It’s pretty inspiring, and the beast part is that there are versions available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and even Android, which you may download here.
