Retro refit of phantasmal fun.
Ghostbusters for the NES has reached a status that is comparable to a modern urban legend. It’s notorious for its bland graphics, broken and unbalanced gameplay mechanics, and laughably bad typos and mistranslations. The game’s infamy got a major boost when it was covered by the Angry Video Game Nerd, insuring that many gamers today know of it even if they never played it. And why would they? Masochism, maybe?
Well, that may no longer be the case thanks to a new hack by NESRocks. The Real Ghostbusters Remastered, besides moving the focus of the game from the movie to the animated series, provides a considerable overhaul to the ridiculous original. The graphics have been almost entirely replaced, drawing heavily from other Ghostbusters games. Additionally, there are countless bugfixes, assorted rebalances, and various tweaks to the performance. Perhaps most notable is that the game is now beatable without tricks or exploits, thanks to the infamous staircase stage having undergone a few simple modifications and fixes.
Check out the video below which shows the hack in action. If you’re keen on trying it out, you can download the patch from here. Of course, we at Hey Poor Player need to issue the disclaimer that you should own a copy of the original game and that downloading and distributing ROM rips of games is illegal. With that out of the way, let us know if you’ve played this and sound off about it in the comments section.
