In news that’s sent shockwaves through the online gaming world, Metroid Prime 4‘s two-year development will reset effective immediately. In the below video presentation by Shinya Takahashi, Nintendo’s Senior Managing Executive Officer, Metroid Prime 4‘s turbulent development resulted in an inadequate product, and so to meet fan expectations, development will shift hands from the unannounced Japanese team to Retro Studios, the original Western-based developer for the Metroid Prime Trilogy. Unfortunately, this means we’ll be subject to an even longer, indefinite wait until completion — bummer!
Aside from Metroid Prime producer Kensuke Tanabe’s continued involvement, while Nintendo never confirmed which development teams were behind Metroid Prime 4, Eurogamer reported last year both Japanese and Singaporean branches of Bandai-Namco were handling the highly-anticipated sequel. This information lines up with tweets by Game Informer’s Imran Khan, who claims the international development process proved disastrous for the project. (Meanwhile, other sources informed Mr. Khan a Metroid Prime Trilogy Switch port — undoubtedly produced to promote the new entry — is already set for launch.)
Internal thinking was that it needs to be all under one roof to right the ship. Interestingly, Retro made the pitch for their involvement and put together a demo that Nintendo liked.

While this delay is surely disappointing for Metroid fans, we at Hey Poor Player applaud Nintendo for taking the series’ revered quality to heart and enforcing drastic measures to meet our expectations. This is hardly the first time Metroid fans endured never-ending patience for a new title, and just as we waited for the series’ 3D debut, we’ll continue to sit tight for Samus Aran’s next galactic adventure.
Are you dismayed by the Metroid Prime 4 delay, or hopeful it can produce a satisfying follow-up? Can Retro Studios recreate their 2000s magic with much of the original Metroid Prime staff long gone? Let us know in the comments below!
