Prima Games, Strategy Guide Extraordinaire, Closes Its Doors

End of an era.

It’s official, folks: after 28 years, Prima Games will cease publishing strategy guides. As announced via press release, publisher DK cites plummeting sales as the impetus behind this “extremely difficult decision,” and so all branches are set to close by March 2019. Alas, it was only the inevitable: much like game magazines, the instant convenience of the internet has rendered strategy guides largely irrelevant; after all, why pay for information when you can simply Google or look up GameFAQs? As noted on EventHubs, Prima recently made numerous attempts to adapt to the modern age such as an online Street Fighter V guide and purchasing competitor BradyGames in 2015, but such efforts proved fruitless.

From its inception in 1990, Prima Games started off penning unofficial guides for the hottest games on the market, be they DOOM, Final Fantasy VII, Super Mario 64, Pokémon Red and Blue, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. While some readers critiqued the common presence of errors, that didn’t stop Nintendo from granting Prima an official license in 2008.

Having devoured countless Prima guides back in the N64/early GC days, I wish the Prima gang the best in their future endeavors. By the way, does anyone recognize the above guide? I made it a personal mission to look it up on eBay as a memento, as my original copy’s practically destroyed. Needless to say, I know what I’ll be saving for one rainy evening.
