Final Smash Bros. Ultimate Newcomers Include Incineroar, Ken, and Piranha Plant (Yes, Really)

We’re just as blindsided as you are.

UPDATE (11/2): As evidenced by a revised Nintendo press release, Piranha Plant won’t be arriving alongside a new stage after all. We’ve since edited this article to reflect this new information.

Yes, your eyes aren’t fooling you: while Pokémon Sun and Moon’s Incineroar and Street Fighter‘s Ken are the final characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate‘s base roster, the Piranha Plant enemy from Super Mario Bros. will chomp his way into battle as the first downloadable character. You can check out trailers for all three characters below:

So much for The Grinch leak, eh? At the very least, we believe we speak for everyone in claiming no one expected Mario’s hungriest nemesis to join the battle! Of course, this is the same series that gave us Mr. Game and Watch and Wii Fit Trainer, so naturally there’d be a surprise or two.

However, Piranha Plant will work a little differently than the game’s other planned DLC characters — up until January 31st, 2019, players can register or physical game cards of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or simply download/pre-purchase the game to obtain the character at no extra charge. The final Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct confirmed the feisty plant isn’t one of the five scheduled DLC characters — it’s more of a bonus, apparently.

Speaking of DLC characters, that process will work a little differently than Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. Each of the five upcoming fighters will arrive individually alongside one stage and several music tracks for the price of $5.99, but a Fighters Pass will be available from the get-go. Priced at $24.99, this set also includes a Mii Fighter outfit for Rex from Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

What do you think about the wackiest addition to Smash Bros. yet? Let us know in the comments below!
