Koch Media acquires the rights to Free Radical’s Timesplitters & Second Sight
Remember Timesplitters? Who am I kidding? Of course, you do. Free Radical Design’s trilogy of over-the-top first-person shooters was all the rage in the early aughts. Featuring wacky weaponry, cheeky humor, and some fantastic multiplayer inspired by the N64 classics Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, the series was a hit for the now-defunct Nottingham, UK-based studio. Now, it seems like the franchise has been giving a second chance.
This morning, THQ Nordic subsidiary Koch Media announced that it had acquired the rights to the series, giving them the rights to develop games based on the brand which will be produced by publisher Deep Silver. “We are hugely excited to have acquired Timesplitters,” commented Klemens Kundratitz, CEO Koch Media GmbH. “The original games gave fans a massive content offer and provided a pure and genuinely fun arcade shooter experience. We have many fans of the Timesplitters series among our own staff who are passionate about creating a product that will thrill today’s gaming audience.”
In addition to Timesplitters, Koch Media has also acquired the rights to Free Radical’s 2004 supernatural action game Second Sight.
While it’ll likely be quite sometime before we a new Timesplitters or Second Sight game, this is definitely exciting news for fans of both of these long-dormant franchises. A fourth game in the Timesplitters saga was in development before Free Radical was shuttered back in 2008. Only time will tell if the next game uses any of the elements from the decade-old project or if it will be an all-new vision for the series.
So, what would you like to see from a new Timesplitters game? Personally, I think 8-player multiplayer via the Switch’s handheld mode would be absolutely brilliant. Be sure to let us know in the comments section.
