Niantic to Bring the Pokémon GO experience to the Harry Potter Universe!
Pokémon GO was an undeniable craze that swept the world for a period. For a time it seemed like literally everybody was playing that game. The accessibility of smartphones and very simple gameplay had people who’d never even heard of a Pikachu breaking into backyards trying to chase down elusive Legendary Pokémon. And now Niantic, the company behind Pokémon GO and other AR games, is looking to break into another huge franchise with Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.
And why not? Harry Potter is probably just as large of a franchise as Pokémon, so any audience they didn’t reach with Pokémon GO would probably be willing to give being a wizard in the real world a shot. Not too much is known about the game itself, but it does promise that you’ll be able to team up with your fellow witches and wizards to learn spells, discover artifacts, and fight powerful enemies.
Harry Potter GO?
While the game may be centered around wizardry and not capturing creatures, Niantic promises it will take some of what worked with Pokémon GO and apply it to this new adventure. Much like Pokémon GO, you’re not doing any magic from the couch: the game will encourage you to take your robes outside and explore. Also, much in line with the new trading features added to Pokémon GO, collaboration is also a big part of the experience of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.
While Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be taking a lot of its cues from the success of its predecessor, Niantic promises that they will use the new game as a place to test out new gameplay mechanics and features, such as cross play between iOS and Android devices as well as an improved AR system that makes things look more realistic.
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite was initially scheduled for release towards the end of 2018, but rumor has it that the game may be pushed to 2019. Are you hoping this new Harry Potter game will turn your smartphone into a magic wand? Let me know in the comments below!
