Assassins Creed Odyssey, the latest in the long-running series closed out Ubisoft’s E3 press event with a new cinematic and gameplay trailer.

The cinematic trailer featured all of the stuff you’d associated with Ancient Greece including statues of Zeus, Atlas, Poseidon, and quite oddly, featured something that clearly resembled Medusa.

Jonathan Dumont, Creative Director for the game, came on-stage to answer a few burning questions in the game. Set in 431 BC,  Assassins Creed Odyssey takes you on a journey around Ancient Greece at a time when Athens is at war with Sparta, during the Peloponnesian War.

He gave a bit of backstory too. In the usual video game character archetypes, you control a mercenary seeking redemption and safety for his/her family.

Yes, that’s right, I said his/her family, because of the first time in the series, you can choose your character right at the start of the game! You can either play as Alexios or Kassandra.

Ubisoft took us through a gameplay demo with Kassandra, where it was revealed that the game features dialogue decisions, similar to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and other contemporaries.

It also seems sailing is a big part of the game, as it opened with a shot of Kassandra sailing between some Greek Islands.

The eagle mechanic of Assassins Creed Origins is back, with another eagle, making it’s appearance early in the trailer.

First Civilization weapons seem to feature, with the Spear of Leonidas, apparently capable of knocking back enemies when thurst into the ground.

Finally, the trailer ended showcases some combat, which looked very familiar to that in Assassins Creed Origins. And then quite bizzarely, something that totally looked like a Minotaur – no, really, a Minotaur.

Check out the gameplay trailer below. Expect to see more come out of E3 as the week progresses as Ubisoft confirmed it is playable at the event.

Assassins Creed Odyssey is set to launch on October 5th. Will you be pre-ordering it? Let us know in the comments below.

Since my Dad bought me a Master System after a stint in hospital I've been utterly obsessed with video games. Sonic The Hedgehog was my first love, but since then, I've not been fussy with genres - RPGs, FPSs, MMORPGs, beat 'em ups and sports simulators - I play them all.
