That’s right: Super Smash Bros. is coming to Nintendo Switch, as revealed in today’s reveal-packed Nintendo Direct! Don’t believe us? Check out out the trailer below!
Very little is known about this new entry, but as you can glance from the Featured Image and the trailer, the Inklings from Splatoon are set to join the fray alongside Mario and a Breath of the Wild-themed Link. Many other familiar silhouettes can be seen near the end including Bowser, Donkey Kong, and Yoshi, but as you have fun spotting who’s who, remember that this game’s slated for a 2018 release.
So, is this an entirely new game? We did recently discuss a rumor regarding it being a Super Smash Bros. for Wii U port, but you gotta admit: this trailer does frame it as an entirely new game, so wouldn’t eventually revealing it as a port bum people out? Naturally, they’d be more up-front with a simple port, but the idea of a Smash being announced and released in the same year seems a little hard to swallow. Not since the Melee days have we had such a miracle, so we wouldn’t be surprised if, at the very least, this entry heavily borrows from the Wii U/3DS games.
It should also be noted the “Original Game: Nintendo/HAL Laboratory” copyright info at the end has been around since the Brawl days, so don’t read into it.
For the record, series creator Masahiro Sakurai has confirmed his involvement with the Switch game. Our friends at Source Gaming have translated his message, which informs fans his silent work on the game and asking for their patience.
