Looks like the leaks were real: at D23 Expo Japan 2018’s Kingdom Hearts Fan Event last night, a Monsters Inc. world was shown showcasing Mike and Sully joining forces with Sora, Donald and Goofy (who, as you can see above, have taken new monster forms; poor Donald and his one eye get mistaken for Mike by Boo!). You can watch the subtitled trailer below:
A closer look at the scenery reveals that like the Toy Story world, this Monsters Inc. scenario takes place after the original film (as evidenced by the “laugh factory” decorations from the final scene). Furthermore, Vanitas from Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep has returned to antagonize this world, and he’s got a score to settle with a certain friend of Sora’s. More footage of the Tangled and Toy Story worlds were shown off as well, with the former finally showcasing Rapunzel and Flynn Rider as party members. Marluxia from Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories is also returning with dubious purposes, alongside The Little Mermaid‘s Ariel as a summon.
And yes, Hikaru Utada is returning to sing the above theme song! “Oath” is the original Japanese version, while “Don’t Think Twice” is the localized version we’ll be hearing in NA/EU territories. Make sure to watch the video’s end to catch a cryptic closing scene between Riku and King Mickey.
Other translated tidbits have made their way out as well: as seen in this leaked screenshot, random NPCs are now following roaming about the worlds of Kingdom Hearts, so now they won’t feel nearly as barren. Gummi Ships are also returning via “open-world” gameplay, complete with battle and exploratory functions. Series director Tetsuya Nomura also teased the inclusion of something he’s “wanted to do” since his Final Fantasy days. KHInsider provides more comments from Nomura here.
Finally, the game’s release date will finally be revealed this E3. Will it launch this fall? This winter? We’ll just have to wait and find out.
