The rumors were indeed true: according to Nintendo’s latest Strategy Briefing, they’re teaming up with American animation studio Illumination (Despicable Me, Minions) to create a Mario film. Series creator Shigeru Miyamoto will be co-producing the flick alongside Illumination Founder CEO Chris Meledandri. No tentative date has been given, but it will be co-financed by Nintendo and Universal Pictures, with the latter distributing it worldwide.
For those experiencing bad memories about the ill-fated 1993 Super Mario Bros. live-action dud, don’t shout doom and gloom just yet: with Miyamoto producing the film and Nintendo overlooking the film-making process, we imagine this will be a film much closer in spirit to Nintendo’s flagship series.
