The Danny DeVito dream is dead…for the better?
Yes, you read that headline correctly: Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds is set to star in the Detective Pikachu live-action movie adaption. The news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which states Reynolds will be undergoing motion-capture for the role. Reynolds joins previously-announced cast members Justice Smith (who plays a character searching for his father alongside the titular character) and Kathryn Newton (who plays a sassy reporter) in the first live-action Pokémon movie, and shooting is set to begin next January in London.
Many fans had previously wished for Danny DeVito to play the titular character, if only in that Mr. DeVito is known for playing gruff characters, but it looks like we’ll be seeing The Merc With a Mouth’s take on the famous Pokémon. (Actually, fans had wanted DeVito to play the character in the unlocalized 3DS game, and his response was…curt, to say the least.)
Little other information regarding this announcement has been shared, but we’ll keep you updated on any further developments regarding the movie.
