Alien Splatter Redux

Alien Splatter Redux

Sinclair Strange has pretty much nailed the 8-bit run-and-gun formula. The sounds and low-color sprites almost perfectly emulate a NES title, but the real key to the experience is the gameplay. With mechanics that function like a cross between Mega Man and Contra, this is a very solid offering of retro-style platforming goodness. And while it’s one of the easier titles on this list, it still manages to be fairly challenging, with some truly diabolical bosses that’ll have you smashing your keyboard in no time. There’s also a wealth of really difficult unlockables for the true masochists out there. Pop on over here to see about adding it to your Steam library.

Kero Blaster

After Cave Story, developer Pixel had a lot to live up to. Kero Blaster wasn’t exactly what people were expecting, but it’s nonetheless an excellent platformer/shooter that funnels the best of the genre into a very digestible little nugget. Players take control of a gun-wielding frog employed by a teleporter-manufacturing company. As the intrepid amphibian, they travel the world and eliminate hazardous wildlife while collection powerups and buying new weapons. It’s all good fun, fairly tough, and the retro aesthetic remains as charming as ever. Hop on over here to check it out.
