The wishes of every Kingdom Hearts fan have been answered at D23 Expo: not only does Kingdom Hearts 3 have a confirmed release date in 2018, but Toy Story will be featured! The most beloved of Pixar’s movie franchises was featured in a five-minute trailer, where Sora, Donald and Goofy have transformed into toys and team up with Woody and Buzz Lightyear! You can watch the footage for yourself below.
There’s plenty of exciting details abound, be it Woody and Buzz joining up to form a 5-member party, the massive size of Andy’s neighborhood, Sora piloting a giant mech, and cryptic clues of the relation between the Toy Story world and hearts. And don’t worry: even if most of the Toy Story gang went missing, there’s still Hamm, Rex, the Army Men and the Little Green Men are still around to provide comic relief.
By the way, don’t Woody and the gang look just how they do in the movies? That may have to do with Pixar’s close supervision: Jason Katz (series story artist) and Tasha Sounart (animation director on Toy Story/Toy Story 2) arrived on stage to discuss their collaboration, such as how Ms. Sounart helped design the toy versions of Sora, Donald and Goofy, as well as the Toy Story Keyblade. It was also revealed John Lasseter himself was involved with the process from day one, and had only one request for the team at Square-Enix: “make it good.”
With how Kingdom Hearts series director Tetsuya Nomura discussed how it was his dream to bring Toy Story to the franchise, we can only assume the beloved movie series will be done justice!
