The rumors came true: The SNES Classic Edition was just announced to launch on September 29th for $80! Coming with 21 games, one particular inclusion has never been released before: the cancelled Star Fox 2! Its release has also been confirmed to launch in Europe with the same line-up of games. Check out the full game list below!
While we’re sad the likes of Chrono Trigger, Super Mario All-Stars and Donkey Kong Country 2 missed the cut, that’s still an incredible selection of games. Bear in mind this is the first time Star Fox and Yoshi’s Island have been officially emulated, which is enough reason to celebrate!
The system comes with two authentic recreations of the classic SNES Controller; while they will be wired, the console will also support Classic Controllers and Classic Controller Pros. Naturally, it also includes a HDMI cable and a USB Charging Cable/AC Adapter.
Star Fox 2 is undoubtedly the collectible’s highlight: the game was originally scheduled for release in 1995 but cancelled in favor of the upcoming Nintendo 64. While a prototype ROM was leaked, it’s been said by series co-creator Dylan Cuthbert that’s not the same as the never-before-seen final product. Star Fox 2 will be unlocked on the system after players clear the original Star Fox’s first level, but we doubt that’s enough to deter us rabid Nintendo fans. (And yes, that is new official artwork by Nintendo!)
Question is, will people actually be able to buy one this time? Will the emulation quality be free of those dark VC filters, like the NES Classic Edition before it? We’ll share more information as the news develops!
Update: And more news you shall get! Kotaku has reached out to Nintendo to confirm there will be “significantly” more SNES Classics available than last year’s NES Minis…but only for this year. Yup, it looks like this’ll be another limited release. Get your pre-orders ready!
