Facing the music.

Alan Wake will be disappearing from retail this Monday. In a bizarre form of “celebration”, the third-person shooter by the creators of Max Payne is currently on sale on Steam – aptly dubbed the Sunset Sale – and will remain so for the duration of the weekend, starting from 10AM PST. We’re talking a discount of 90%, so it’s well worth picking up if you haven’t already. The discount will apply to the main game, its DLC, and Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, which is not effected by the same licensing issues. GOG.com also reports it will be having a sale on the same title.

No, it’s not some cheap gimmick to get you to scoop up the game in a frenzy; it’s actually related to licensing issues. Specifically, the license for music in the game is set to expire shortly. It makes extensive use of various bits of contemporary and not-so contemporary songs at the conclusion of its chapters.

Developers Remedy Entertainment said that they’d like to re-license the music and once again put the game on retail in the future, but haven’t committed to any dates. That means that this is the last time you can legally purchase Alan Wake for a while. And no, you won’t have to burn through it in a marathon session this weekend, as the game will still be available to download and play in your Steam account.

In case you’re not in the know, the game is a horror-thriller that feature protagonist Alan Wake, who is an author haunted by nightmarish visions. He’s out to find his wife after her mysterious disappearance, but he ends up running into more questions than answers as he encounters strange phenomenon and pages from a novel he doesn’t recall writing.

Scoop it up by popping on over to its official Steam page. Check out the trailer below to jog your memory in the meantime.
