NEETs Have it Tough in Akiba’s Beat

Not in education, employment, or training, but still a protagonist in Akiba’s Beat

Tokyo’s Akihabara District has been known as many different things by many different people, and Akiba‘s Beat plans to add one more thing to that list – the place where a NEET saved Tokyo.

In Akiba’s Beat, players will take control of Asahi Tachibana. A self-proclaimed “career NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training)”, Asahi spends his days doing little more than watching anime, reading manga, and living the otaku life to the fullest – but all of that changes when he notices that things aren’t quite right in Akiba. Realizing that people’s dreams, desires, and personal views on how Akiba should be have started to physically manifest in his beloved district – something that very few could see – Asahi set out on a quest that would take him from zero to hero… or maybe just make him a little less lazy.

As players uncover the truth behind what’s manipulating Akiba, they will need to form a party (as protagonists are wont to do), delve into labrynths – dungeons made from people’s dreams – and dispel the delusions lurking within. It won’t be easy, but a protag’s gotta do what a protag’s gotta do.

Developer ACQUIRE has recreated Akhabara as faithfully as possible in Akiba’s Beat, meaning that players will be able to see what the city is actually like as they play. Saving the world may be a lot of work, but doing it in a place like Akiba can’t be too bad. …Right?

Akiba‘s Beat releases on May 16 in North America, and on May 19 in Europe. Will you be dispelling the delusions? Let us know int he comments below!

Starting out with nothing more than a Game Boy and a copy of Donkey Kong Land, Kenny has happily been gaming for almost his entire life. Easily-excitable and a bit on the chatty side, Kenny has always been eager to share gaming-related thoughts, opinions, and news with others and has been doing so on Hey Poor Player since 2014 and has previously worked with both PKMNcast and SCATcast. Although his taste in gaming spreads across a wide number of companies and consoles, Kenny holds a particular fondness for Nintendo handheld consoles. He is also very proud of his amiibo collection. You can also find him on Twitter @SuperBayleef talking about video games and general nonsense. Some of his favorite games include Tetris Attack, Pokémon Black Version 2, The World Ends With You, Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, Yo-kai Watch, Donkey Kong Country 2, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Kirby's Dreamland 3, Mega Man X, and Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia (among many others).
