Here’s some great news for all you retro gamers out there. Publisher Pqube announced today that a bundled pack of two volumes of Atari Flashback Classics are on their way late next month. Across the volumes are old favourites like Swordquest, Asteroids, Missile Command, Centipede, Haunted House and Major Havoc (which personally I’m pretty hyped for). Granted, some of these games have aged better than others, but it’s hard not to be tempted by the promise of the HD remastering of old classics, as well as online play and leaderboards. With the leaderboards in particular, I’m sure we’ll see the resurfacing of old arcade veterans going toe to toe with the newbies.
A lot of modern indie games in particular have borrowed and been influenced by these Atari classics (some of which are close to 40 years old). You won’t need much of an excuse to delve back in, particularly to the more experimental titles. They’re not just a snapshot of the past and most of these games are genuinely still a great way to spend your time. Granted, the quality between a hundred titles will be mixed, but some of the games listed here are individual gems you could spend a whole weekend with.
There have been plenty of bundles in the past that have amounted to little more than a random bundle of ROMS. With this pack it looks like we can expect a bit more love and care. Aside from the remastering and online element, there is also an ‘extensive visual archive of classic artwork for each game’ to really ramp up that feeling of nostalgia.
The pack (which contains both volumes on one disc) is coming to PS4 and Xbox One on March 31st. Surely any self respecting game is pretty tempted?
