Pokémon Sun and Moon have already sold 14 million!
The latest Nintendo fiscal report arrived with some big news: Pokémon Sun and Moon sold over 14 million units…and that was just in 2016! While Pokémon games have always sold like crazy–here’s a list of sales as provided by GoNintendo–none of the previous entries ever reached such heights so quickly. In the financial report, Nintendo attributed this massive success to the Pokémon Go phenomenon, which was also responsible for boosting sales of 3DS hardware and Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. As of now, Pokémon Sun and Moon are only behind Mario Kart 7 (14.82 million) and Pokémon X and Y (16.06 million) in 3DS software sales.
Naturally, other notable sales landmarks were announced as well. The 3DS port of Super Mario Maker was a million-seller before 2016’s end and has now sold over two million units, while Kirby: Planet Robobot also achieved million-seller status. Amiibo figures and cards were also still selling steadily, with over six million sold for each. But not every piece of news was positive: Wii U sales continue to decline, digital sales were down and only 5% of Super Mario Run‘s 78 million downloads purchased the full game. Nintendo CEO Tatsumi Kimishima announced the company is hoping the conversion rate will at least reach double digits for Mario‘s first mobile title.
However, he went on to say that Switch pre-orders are doing great, so production of the upcoming console was expected to ramp up. Furthermore, the Animal Crossing mobile title is slated to arrive within the next fiscal year, which starts this April. The top ten-selling games for Wii U and 3DS were also updated, which GoNintendo has provided here.
