Requires Source SDK. Man, where do I even start with this one? It almost feels like an injustice to call Underhell a “mod”; it’s so large in scope and so stuffed with ideas that it’s every bit a game in its own right. And it’s still not even close to completion!
The title places you in the boots of a bald, silent protagonist named Jake Hawkfield, who works as a SWAT officer. He has to deal with the emotional turmoil of his wife’s suicide, rescue hostages, eliminate terrorists, cope with prison life, and survive a zombie outbreak – and that’s all just in the prelude and first episode! The game’s ideas can hardly be called original, but what sets it apart is how it skilfully melds so many FPS and horror clichés together to form a cohesive whole, and still deliver a satisfying gaming experience. It manages to switch between stealth, survival, exploration and all-out frag-fest without ever feeling disjointed or out of place. It has more content than many AAA titles, and while it lacks some polish in places, it’s easily the best Source-based experience we’ve had since Half-Life 2. Browse over here to get your copy now.
