New Take On a Classic Game
The classic side-scroller Wonder Boy is getting a polished new look for its upcoming Steam release. Dubbed Wonder Boy Returns, the new version aims to keep the same feel of the original gameplay with newly designed visuals.
The project is being developed by Korean dev/publisher CFK. They have spent more than a decade localizing Japanese language games for Korean audiences and now they are putting that experience to work on re-envisioning Wonder Boy Returns.
The story follows the titular Boy on his fast-paced quest to rescue his girlfriend, Tina. She had just been scolding him for frolicking with other girls before the Red Devil abducts her. Boy must fight his way through 10 stages and 40 maps to rescue her and apologize.
On the 4th map of each stage he will encounter a boss monster which he must defeat to progress. The bosses look equal parts menacing and adorable with the new graphics and with three levels of difficulty and hidden items to watch for there is some definite re-playability.
All the characters and enemies have been redesigned to fit with the new cell coloring graphics with the familiar side-scrolling battle mechanics that are all the rage with retro lovers. Wonder Boy Returns looks to be a solid hit for fans of old school action arcade platformers. Look for it to hit Steam around the middle of October.
