Dear God, how many hours have I poured into Spelunky? This game has been on my Vita for years– and I still pick it up and play it probably once a week. It’s premise is simple: You are an explorer that is diving deeper and deeper into a procedurally generated cave; It’s a 2D rogue-like where your goal is to make it to the end. Sounds simple, right? WRONG! Spelunky‘s biggest success is that it never really tells the player anything. What does that tiki head do? Oh, shoot, it tries to murder me with an arrow. From this point forward, I know to stand clear of those tiki heads. The game is a learning process, but it’s one of the most enjoyable learning curves I have ever seen in a game. There is no leveling up system, and yet I am a thousand times better than when I started. The “XP” system is ACTUAL experience, and that is brilliant; I legitimately felt like Indiana Jones, and that’s just about the highest honor I can give a game. Spelunky is a glorious combination of cool art design, endless replayability, cool co-op multiplayer, and learning. Please, if you haven’t played Spelunky, give it a go.
